Take a close look at that battery. This smoke detector was taken out of a home after a fatal fire. It was the ONLY smoke detector in the home and it didn't work. Someone, at some time, had taken the battery out of the detector and turned it around disabling it. Look closely at those battery and detector contacts!
You say it doesn't happen much? We find this sort of thing happening all the time!
